Proba-2 Catches Eclipse

The European Space Agency's has released a timelapse sequence from its Proba-2 mission that shows the recent annular eclipse from space. The Proba-2 spacecraft is a technology demonstrator and contains SWAP - Sun Watcher using APS detectors and imaging processing - to capture an image of the Sun on the timescale 1 minute.

The recent confirmation by the UK funding council (STFC1) of a sharp reduction in funding for astronomy and particle physics has not only created a lot of ill feeling, but is seen perhaps as the end of practical astronomy research in the UK. In order to see if this is really true the cuts must be viewed in context and the appropriate conclusions drawn.
